any corrosive acid would dissolve plasticine.

you might have a point. sulphuric acid is corrosive but not necessarily a 'strong' acid.

Plasticine is probably made with acid in the first place, so will need a 'strong' acid to kill it.

Make sure you do it in a fume cupboard then. And shove Mr Bennett and Noseybonk in too.

Will do. To be honest though, when I saw you'd replied mjonesy I thought it was going to provide some clarification about the plasticine / acid business, which has now started to bug me.

Afraid I've forgotten an awful lot of my chemistry. I think sulphuric acid is fairly strong as an acid, but isn't fully dissociated, so isn't as strong in pH (concentration of H+ ions) as say hydrochloric acid. It is however a very powerful oxidising agent, which is what does most of the damage. I've no idea what plasticine is made of and cant be bothered to google it. Hopefully a real chemist will be along shortly...

Well I have googled this and sulphuric is very corrosive but not very strong.

I just want to see morph dropped into a bucket of acid that is fit for purpose and watch him fizzle and scream.

I have a strong feeling about who is going to be along eventually to sort this out but he will be more of a failed physicist than chemist.

Hydrofluouric acid should do the business.

OK, I've given in an asked Wiki what plasticine is:

"Plasticine, a brand of modelling clay, is a putty-like modelling material made from calcium salts, (principally calcium carbonate), petroleum jelly and aliphatic acids."

So a strong acid will attack the calcium carbonate. Concentrated sulphuric acid should also oxidise the petroleum jelly quite effectively as well as the aliphatic acids which I think are just acetic acid and its longer carbon chain relatives. So I'd have thought your first choice would be fine.

well, cheers. A bathful of sulphuric acid into which to drop morph, his albino bastard half-brother, and all those ones the children made yesterday in that tribute to tony hart.

Post a pic will you? Or better still, put it on YouTube.

Make sure it is concentrated sulphuric acid though. Remember your advice to me about not diluting it.
