I used to think that conveyancing was a bread and butter job for any solicitor, so I chose a local solicitor to do the job (from Yellow Pages). When I had to go visit him to sign some documents, his office was like a 1970s scene from Life on Mars. All his files were stacked up 5ft high and 3-deep, his office stank of cigs and his breath stank of booze and he was totally incompetent from start to finish.

Apart from that, I'd highly recommend him.

This may be a bit daft, I'm not up to date with mortgages and the like, - but what is to stop you selling the house and putting the money in your own bank account, keeping it there for a couple of weeks, then paying off the mortgage once the redeption period is over ?

If there's a mortgage on it it's not your house to sell and the mortgage is secured against the house.

Because you cant sell a house without the deeds, and guess who has the deeds.
