Anyone else with this issue?

I first noticed it about 18 months ago but didn't really give it any thought as I had just bought new walking boots and put it down to them so returned them and bought another pair but it didn't go away.

Then I was talking to someone a couple of months ag5who said they always struggled with it so I googled it and self diagnosed myself.

Well yesterday I treated myself to some Barefoot type shoes https://www.purestep.co.uk/?tw_sour...n6m6QeH6iCaS5OQAcAxC5jABrCxLCLaxoCAqYQAvD_BwE which came highly recommended.

So once they arrive I will test them and see what happens

Not now, but...

I know several people who have suffered from Morton's neuroma as a result of tight shoes/boots squeezing their feet. I did it to myself too with a pair of new Shimano cycling shoes that caused so much pain in 2 hours that I couldn't walk properly for weeks afterwards.

Not nice!

Mine don't feel tight but neither do my walking boots

I did swap to a new pair of Shimano shoes.

I find Shimano shoes are effectively about 1.5 UK sizes too small for me relative to their nominal size. The length is fine but they are too narrow for me. (I don't know if Shimano do shoes of different widths. I found the same problem with 3 different types of Shimano shoes.)

I now buy bigger [Shimano**] shoes and take up any slack in the width by tightening the straps. I end up with a small gap beyond my toes but that is fine for me. Tightening of the straps stops my feet sliding forwards in the shoes when pedalling. I sometimes find that my feet swell up slightly on long rides in hot weather. If that happens, I stop and adjust the straps.

I haven't had a recurrence of the problem since.


** I have a pair of Specialized shoes which are perfectly comfortable at my normal shoe size.

I tend to get a bout of it once a year. High instep. Can be caused by over tightening shoes and walking lots. Not the cycling shoes though !

September 2024 on a long walk I stopped to straighten what I thought was a folded sock. Had this feeling all over the winter 24/25. Spring 25 Id had enough and started googling. Self diagnosed Morton’s Neuroma discovered I had less moment in that foot's toes and determined to get rid of it religiously did lots of foot exercises.
November 25 still troubled and no better at I all I got a doctors appointment. She said not MN and sent me for Ultrasound The ultrasound found nothing so I got googling again.
With a firm press in just the right way I could pinpoint pain. Plantar Plate tear YouTube Podiatry experts I began taping the 2&3 rd toes down and within weeks I’m so much better Some of the exercises I’d been doing with hindsight weren’t helping.
Should I have visited a good podiatrist back in September 24? Maybe but I hate spending money 🥲

I had the symptoms about 12 years ago following riding a hot hilly event in Normandy during which I got “ Hot foot” couldn’t shake of the symptoms. I had some physiotherapy but the therapist said I didn’t fit the profile for it. Physiotherapy didn’t clear it up I then saw a couple of consultants one of whom arranged for me to have an ultra sound scan which showed I had some inflammation in my foot but no real nerve damage.
I had a Steroid injection done by the radiologist which gave me some relief but I still got pain when cycling. I tried riding with no insoles in shoes which helped a bit, I then bought some Sidi mega shoes and mostly my foots fine excepts when I do a very hilly and very hot ride. However if I take shoe off for a bit the pain goes.
I also rock climb and wear very tight climbing shoes but I didn’t get the pain with them.

Had it, been there, got the T Shirt. Both feet.

There is only one solution. Have it cut out. Don't phaff about with wide shoes and custom insoles and this and that. Anthing other than surgery and morphine is a waste of time. I can now wear any shoe I want, do any length of time on the bike I want and have no pain. In addition, I can stub out even a fat cigar butt with my bare foot without feeling anything. The smell of burning skin is still awful thoughj.
