I had similar tonight on my way home. Van driver going mental cos I pulled out and made him stop all of 5 feet before the traffic jam in front rather than 3 (I was basically crossing a road of almost stationary traffic). TBH I find I don't normally get too many problems with WVM - it's the bloody clueless 'I don't give a toss about anyone' Hooray Volvo brigade round here that present the biggest menace I find. Flippin' nightmare.

Taxi drivers, generally fine. Van drivers, again generally fine (in fact I remember many who have let me turn right off a main road, or gone wide on an overtake). Proper motorcyclists - the older boys with the classy sports bikes, again quite good.

As you and 400bhp say though, its the ordinary commuter who tends to get it wrong. Well from my experiences...

The police are about to come and take a statement,

Wow. Could be the police are coming to take you away along with your statement.

The police are about to come and take a statement, and hopefully it will be on cctv as it was right outside a secondary school.

Yep. Showing you goading him with your camera phone instead of doing the right thing and leaving the scene asap along with the finger :0

in fact that's where his keys landed after he threw them, just inside the railings of the school.

Well if your syatement is anything like the comedy gold script :-D on here this CC forum you could be in trouble. Lets hope you went no comment lol

Thanks CopperCyclist, I really regret having given him the middle finger and you're right that my concern should really be with the CPS and the legislation rather than the police.

I can't see why you should be regretful, that moron who cut in may wipe out an unsuspecting cyclist out next time.

Because I completely agree with the argument that the more polite you are to people the more moronic and angry it makes them look. However, in this situation (and what I think many of my critics overlooked) I had already tried a polite approach and my use of the digitus impudicus was a reaction to his petulant behaviour. I think I may have given the impression that I regularly swear at drivers or was easily wound up by him, but in fact it's quite the contrary; I was composed the whole time not allowing his behaviour to affect me, and despite the law I see nothing wrong with my choice of gesticulation.

I had a really helpful Police Officer come and talk to me, he agreed with me and others who have already commented, that the CPS are unlikely to want to do much with it and asked me what I expected from the Police. Taking a pragmatic approach I asked if someone could go and have a word with the driver to which the Police Officer said he will indeed be going to give him a b*llocking. I am happy with this as I understand it is beyond the Police's remit to really do much else, but I still reckon I should have just nabbed his keys after he chucked them at me and left it at that.

Why did you flash your lights? Obviously it was seen as a sign of intimidation from the cyclists.

Interesting thread - I must admit that if a driver does something really bad and it seem to be deliberate (as opposed to just being daft/absent-minded) I do have a habit of giving them the finger. I really must stop doing it and maybe this thread will help me.

I do give a fair few drivers thumbs/palms up for good/nice behaviour, but I should stop the fingers - they often deserve it but it isn't helpful and can be downright dangerous if things escalate.

We still haven't heard the most relevant part of the story.

Did the OP buy the bike, was it a good'un and was his better half pleased with it.
Ha ha, thank you; yes I failed to mention that. It's a really nice condition ladies Raleigh Cameo, with a working dynamo and lights that just needs a wicker basket to complete the look and all I payed was £50. She likes it so much she's convinced she wants to use it when we go touring in the summer. Not sure about that ha ha.
