Most you have been embarrassed online?

I'm hoping this is a minor offence. i made facebook friends with two of my partner's (now ex's) second cousins. Nice young men living on the edge of the world - literally to my NATO standards. Anyway, their joint birthdays came up on Facebook, so I asked "Are you twins?" No, sadly. They were triplets. I don't believe I responded appropriately. I just hope I fulfilled the minimum Russia etiquette for such a question.

I am probably dim here, but why were you embarrassed?
It's not like they are your family, how are you supposed to know they are triplets?
I would have written "Oh, are you 3? Great! Happy birthday to the other one too!"

If it's not clear, I already knew there were 2 brothers. What I didn't know is that they were born triplets and one of them died at birth. I was pretty sure I knew all the siblings.

I have had the fortune/misfortune to be standing at someone's side metaphorically to two still borns. So I have witnessed the question "Oh, you were pregnant last time I saw you. How is your baby?"

Pretty mortified to be on the other side.

Well, in that case they should not have mentioned it, public on FB anyway.
It should have been clear to them that you didn't know, and anyway it is not relevant on a general FB birthday greeting, unless they made a page for the passed away one!
If this is such a sensitive issue for the family, there is an option to hide your date of birth on social media.

I don't suggest the OP raises this with them, but it makes me wonder about the definition of being a triplet.

It's probable all three foetuses were alive in the womb, but only two may have been alive outside it.

One foetus may have been aborted earlier.

Strictly, I suppose each of the surviving children is 'one of three', but I think a more common definition of a triplet would be one of three children who were all born alive, even if one didn't survive long.

I never respond to anyone's FB birthday. I don't want every fraudster in the World to know my DoB so when forced to enter one on FB I entered a false one. I just assume that other folk's FB birthdays may be misleading too.
But if you know the person you often wish them happy birthday anyway.....

I have a friend who set up a second fb account for her work as an artist and left the DOB as 1 January. It's quite amusing every new year to see the happy birthday messages roll in, as people who obviously don't know her respond to the automated message telling them it's her birthday.
