Motor insurance cost(s) question.

I have a normal 65 plate petrol auto.
No accidents, kept on the drive etc.
On the insurance I am the sole driver and always have 'fully comp'.
My daughter and SiL have their own vehicles but occasionally eg yesterday need mine.
She is insured 3rd party for my car VIA HER INSURANCE.
I would be happier if she drove mine fully comp'.
Q. Would it be cheaper to get this done via her own insurance or for me to include it on mine?
I dont know if its possible to answer this and sadly everything is on line nowadays, you dont speak to a human until you pull the trigger.

Bizarrely, often the addition of a statistically lower-risk driver can bring the premium down (historically, plus they'll no doubt try to screw you if amending a policy rather than adding the driver when the insurance is first taken out). I can only assume that adding vehicles to an existing policy will increase the premium.

As you allude to, the only people who can answer this question are the insurers.

As Wafter suggests, getting a quote to add her to yours might even lower your premium. I keep Mrs D on the van insurance fornthar very reason even though she never actually drives it.

Check with your lass, as its increasingly common for policies to no longer include the 'drive any other car 3rd party' bit. I have it on my policy for the van, but Mrs D's car policy no longer has that as standard.

If you go down the route of asking your daughter and SIL to amend their policies, you would be giving them the burden of changing their policies and in the event of a claim, they would have to process the claim as well. Going this route, there would be two costs for policy changes

So would be better if you took the responsibility and changed your own policy.

Re your daughter and SIL, you say they have their own policies, but do they have partners? Could be themselves named drivers on a shared policy.

A 65 plate, does that mean an eleven year old car? In the event of any claim, the insurance company are likely to write it off, so what is the value of your car. Could you afford to take the risk and self insure, assuming your daughter and SIL have third party cover?

When does your current policy renew? Possibly wait until then and negotiate cover for "Any driver, with your permission (over xx years)".

My aunt is in her 80s and she has put me on her car insurance. I'm in my 60s but it's reduced her premiums by about half. I normally only drive her car twice a year but I cover relatively long distances and do about 5% of it's annual mileage.

Ahh, yes, I could you that as realistically they would only value it at a few grand and I could cover any standard repair costs.

2. Continue as is but is she wrecks your car who is going to pay?
3. Ask her to insure your car and add you as a named driver. Cheapest for you but after a year of that you loose your NCB.

I would go with option 1 unless your car is worth FA then I'd consider option 2. Option 3 only works if you takes turns each year taking out the insurance.

Is it not only the registered owner of a car that can insure it though? Dave would have to transfer ownership of his car to his daughter for her to insure it as far as I know.

Simplest way is to just add her on to his policy. There might be an existing discount for restricting to just one driver at the moment which would be lost.

Just add her/them as named drivers when you renew (you can check all the permutations in the apps/comparison sites)
You should be renewing now as it's often cheaper some way in advance (if you already had your renewal through from existing, you can usually just call them to discuss)

Either add them to yours if this ad hoc arrangement is regular or often or look at one of these day insurance options if it is every blue moon.

No.

Apart from anything else, there is no such thing as the "registered owner". It specifically states on the registration document that the keeper is not necessarily the owner.

They do usually ask if you are the registered keeper when taking out insurance, but not sure how much difference that makes to the policy cost.

Yes, that is the simplest - and may well be the cheapest unless daughter is under 25.

But if that is fairly expensive, and the car not worth much, it may be best to just leave things as they are since any payout for damage to the car may be not very much more than the premium.

Adding my older brother to my policy with clean history adds barely anything to my policy costs (if anything).
