It’s an awful result for the average armchair fan who only watches one live race a year.
Why couldn’t they have started the last lap?

Supposedly the ‘safety car in this lap’ message was displayed erroneously. As we learnt in 2021, you’re supposed to complete one lap after allowing the lapped cars to unlap themselves.

However I also thought that the decision to allow lapped cars through was discretionary?

Teams were given the message as the first person in the queue that had been lapped, got to the line to start the lap.

Because the lapped cars hadn't reached the back of the queue, and the fact there was a glitch in the software. They had the option to throw a red and restart, but didn't take it.

I'm surprised Lewis didn't get an additional penalty for the yellow flag infringement, as he straight out admitted in the media pen later that he didn't see the flag and kept his foot in.

They did say in commentary that those usually come to nothing in that type of situation.

And any time penalty would have been ridiculous given they were all bunched up behind the safety car.

Shown in the slow motion replay that he'd just passed the incident that caused it, and at the time there was only a green flag/light showing.

Doesn't mean he shouldn't have slowed because he saw the car stationary, off the track, as a driver in the race.

There was a car shown crossing the line when the message was sent to the teams. Ruling out one more racing lap. Showed up on the lights on the steering wheel.

The teams then had to relay that message to their drivers.
