Following TC's thread in Commuting that mentioned cyclists on motorways, I found this link....

Pathetic Motorways

Check out how your local motorway network might have looked. Me? I've got everything I ever wished for in the M3 Twyford Down cut.

On a similar theme, here's the motoring equivalent of Warrington's cycle facility of the month:

What a joy that they did not build the M272 - it would have gone through Portswood, straight past Southampton Common, and in so doing would have utterly destroyed Southampton's only leafy, green and pleasant area, the attraction of which is reflected by today's house prices in the area (among the most expensive in Southampton!). It just makes me wonder what kind of people they had on the council at the time, who thought, "Yup, that's it, we'll build a motorway through the most beautiful part of the city".

Of course it may not have been a motorway but how fortunate the proposed York Inner ring road hasn't happened!

A dual carriagway around the city, just outside of the city walls.

I've seen that site linked to before, and thought just the same as you!

its superb site.

the M12 bit at the bottom of the M11 is great for riding on, its been planted up a bit now so you lose the visual of how the junction would have looked

The A167[M] Central Motorway in Newcastle is responsible for me not attending my interview at Newcastle University School of Architecture in 1977.

I hadn't passed my motorbike test at the time, so try as I might, it took me an hour, in freezing hail and wind, to get anywhere near the University without using the motorway. I gave up, thinking the place was a cold, dark dump and went home in disgust... 34 years later- here I am.

I spent hours in school watching the M62/ M1 junction at Lofthouse being built and the M62 builders nicked half the playing fields and the wood beyond it for the link and the sliproads....
