Costa Blanca.............inland from Benidorm, Jalon Valley, Col de Rates, Puerto de Tudons (see next Saturday's stage of La Vuelta, C4 19.00hrs) and many more great climbs. Weather should be good in October. Fly to Alicante, stay in the Jalon valley or on the coast, Moraira, Denia, Calpe, just a short drive away.
Obviously, if you can choose a different season, you should visit the Pyrennes (Col d'Aubisque featured in La Vuelta recently) and of course the alps; Mont Ventoux a favourite of mine, and next year we're returning to Bourg d'Oisans at the foot of Alpe d'Huez where there are many more great climbs such as the Col du Glandon, Madeleine and so on.

Never thought of that , but it's obvious now you mention it !
Just had a look at some pics. Looks amazing. Have plans to cycle down through the Balkans (is that term still used - or is it considered offensive - memories of northern dark afternoon history lessons) and will try to get that way.
