or for a more permanent and less messy solution, try an electric rodent repeller - they plug into a socket and transmit a noise that's inaudible to humans (and cats). I got one when I had a little four legged visitor and couple of year ago and I've never seen any sign of it since.

For a while it worked with the large tree rat in our attic... but its back scampering around ... that's why I'm awake now. And last night I discovered its trying to chew into my camping box ... its got saucepans, gas cutlery and things like that but no food in it! I think it may be time to call in the proper pest control for me.

But definitely the electronic device worked for a couple of years.

My mum lives in an old thatched cottage in the south and she has lots of mice. The electronic things don't work at all.

Get one of these, they're fun to have around even when not killing mice:

Peanut butter seems to work for me.

Also my top tip is to get a shoe box and cut a hole in each end down in a corner and put the box along by the wall where they go with the trap in it.

Seems to work well as they get in everywhere to look round. Wipe a bit of food on the floor of the box to make it very attractive.

In the morning you are not confronted with a splatted mouse before breakfast. And you can put the whole lot in the dustbin if you want.

Also if your kids have banned you from using splat traps you can slip one of these somewhere and they will not know.

They're not actually that wild about it. Tom & Jerry have a lot to answer for.

I got some plastic ones which had a small circular indentation which was filled with a orangey/browny substance which was, apparently, pheromone based. Worked brilliantly and we had a real infestation of the little blighter in the loft. We had to dispose of 3 - 4 of theme every morning for5 days, after which, no more meece.

Mars bar works brilliantly, its not humane by any means. The last one in my flat I found after a couple of weeks by smell looked like it didn't enjoy the caramel and nougat.
