i am looking to cycle from Geneva airport to Avignon via Ventoux and want to send my bike bag ahead of me to Avignon. Has anyone any experience of moving an empty bike box through France?

I pick up a cardboard bike box at a local bike shop at the destination. Carry or buy ductape. Keep packing tools to hand until bike has been accepted as luggage. I once had to repack the bike smaller because the xray machine was smaller at the destination. Much easier if your ductape and knife have not been send through already in your luggage.

What happens at Avignon ?
Do you fly from there or are you flying back from Geneva ?
If from Geneva then I'd leave the box there and get back to Geneva by train which means you don't need to pack the bike (as long as you don't use the TGV's)

You could send it unaccompanied from the airport but it'll be expensive. Best check out some the specialist baggage hauliers on line.
Perhaps @woodbutcher could help out here?
Not sure if this is totally appropriate but l have tried lots of carriers and Colissimo are by far the cheapest and very reliable. It will take two or three days from posting until delivery . Check them out https://tarifs-postaux.fr/tarif-colissimo.htm
