If you're not confident getting the cleat position sorted, go and see your LBS.

When I got my first SPD shoes I bought them from the same lbs as I got my bike and got the guy to set the cleat position. It took him about 30 seconds and he never looked at how my feet hang or whatever. After around 10 miles riding home both my knees were killing me. When I got home I read a bit on the net and sat with my legs hanging over a table to get an idea of what position the cleats should be set at. He had set them a mile off, more or less for my feet to be straight on the pedals. Whereas in reality my heels are toed in quite a lot. 2,000 or so miles later never a problem.

I guess it depends what the lbs shop is like, 2 local to me have both been pretty average to say the least. Then again I am probably just a bit unlucky, but there are plenty of good guides on the internet for setting up cleat position.
