Hi,

Chain Set: Shimano Deore M590 triple.

I've noticed that my peddles have a 2-4mm pivot, centred around where they secure to the frame. Looking at other bikes in our work's bike shed, the road bikes are absolutely rigid. There is an old Ridgeback in the bike shed and the peddles on that are loose. I'm wondering if I have a fault with my Chain set or if a certain amount of give is usual. Does anyone know?

Thanks,
Dp.

It sounds like you have play in your bottom bracket. When you wiggle the cranks from side to side is there play? This is the part which the cranks connect with a spindle, which in turn run in bearings, ,it is these which seem like to have worn. If you intend to do the job yourself you will need a crank extractor and something to unscrew the "cups" which hold in the spindle. You can always the bike to your LBS.

LOL, Hollowtech II is pants. I've been through 2 of the standard Deore BB bearings in under 6000 miles and have fitted the XT bearing set at the last replacement to see if they last any better (deep down I really doubt it). I would put good money on the play you are experiencing just being caused by failed/failing bearings in the bottom bracket.

On a plus note, relating to your other thread, the M590 crankset with the bigger chainrings you want comes with a 'free' BB so that is an approx. £13 you can figure in as a reduction in the cost of the new chainset because you will need a BB anyway.
