(Pre-amble) I recently got some great advice on this forum for buying my first road bike. I was after 'bang for buck'and I love my Felt but unfortunately after 6 months of riding my back is really struggling. My plan is to get another bike to give my back a break once or twice a week. I've recently discovered some off road tracks near my house so a mountain bike appeals, looking for something entry level but also 6ft6 so that might impact selection. I'd like something that would be OK for my 6 mile each way commute (very big climb on way home).

Just some thoughts on where to start would be much appreciated. I spent £370 on my road bike and was really impressed with the quality but have no idea how much an equivalent MTB would be.

I've got a (n older model):

I'm a couple of inches shorter than you and its one of the few bikes I don't have the seat all the way up so the xxl should have enough room. Its a decent compromise between MTB & commuter and you may be able to pick it up a bit cheaper

For commuting get yourself an old but decent quality steel or cromo framed mtb. Slap on some 1.5" cityjets and you got yourself a tough all weather tarmac terrorist.

+1 to that except for the tyres if you're looking to combine both activities.

I use Schwalbe Hurricane tyres for a mixed road and trail commute.

Alternatively Schwalbe Cityjet's on one set of wheels and buy a 2nd set (eBay/etc) with MTB tyres.
