My first memories of him was the time I was having my tonsils taken out and during my recovery, he was fighting here in Britain against Henry Cooper and though I was only 5, it was obvious how much interest this had created as I remember all the men in the ward crowding around the radio to listen to the commentary of the fight.

A great boxer. We can all argue about the ethics of professional boxing but, putting that to one side, he was one of the best. But there are plenty of great boxers. What made Ali stand out was his stance on the Vietnam war draft that resulted in him losing 4 years of his career at the peak of his powers. In a business driven by money that took some doing and showed that he was a man of principle
