I'm thinking a mass escape.

There goes my theory. Cats use teaspoons to dig out their secret underground lair.

Does your neighbour have cats? Their plan could be quite advanced.

This could all be united in a tunnel theory. They may have dug outside the wire already.

Socks just decide to have a vacation.... Sometimes they need a little space from their partner who have become dependant on them being there! Give them time (a week seems to be a good length in this household), and they often return to their partner.... And if not the kindest think to do is to put them out of their misery and clean your bike with one!

As for teaspoons .... Your mistake is in not encouraging them to breed, I have at least 2 dozen and I expect more, though Mr Summerdays thinks they live in a different place to me so every now and again I help rescue them!
