Why do some people make it difficult when searching for Orion? I just look for a group of bright stars that look like an old kite with a tail.

I've never noticed it like that, but it's such a distinctive shape in the sky, of course the clouds seem to be thinning now it's lighter (and I've a cup of coffee in bed now).

If the skies were a lot clearer and the stars were brighter way back in the past. How on earth did our ancestors pick on the ones they did? Surely it would have been like choosing your favourite grains of sand on a beach.

The ones that seem bright now would still be the brightest in the sky then, and we like to see patterns shape even in random things, think of all those clouds shapes we notice.

No. it's all about relative brightness and not absolute brightness. The brightest ones now were still the brightest ones then. The history of astrology is nothing compared to the life span of stars.
The life span of the sun is around 13 billion years. The lifespans vary with size and go from 100 million to 100 billion years.

I have bern fortunate enough to find myself in a couple of places completely free from light polution. The view of the Milky Way and the total quantity of stars is amazing, however the constillations can still clearly be seen
