Muppet show Ep 2

I have two options on my commute. The scenic, hilly, longer route which I love and a faster A road that gets me home quicker. Tonight the weather was bad, windy and wet, and as my scenic route is exposed I decided to take the A road home. These are examples of why I avoid the A road when possible. It is rare to cycle this route without some sort of problem.

Is there any hope for a road like this? Can anything be done, or should cyclists avoid roads like this when possible?

Shockers, although Muppet 1 did a surprisingly wide overtake.

There's plenty of the country racetrack type roads like that around my gaff and I avoid them like the plague. Fast (despite the 30mph limit) and narrow is a bad combination.

Aye his overtake was fine, although he sat right on my back wheel and signalled that I should be over to the left as he past. With the width of the road, and the oncoming traffic, I'm not entirely sure where he expects me to go!

To hell, Dave, he expected you to go to hell.

FWIW, I !HATE! being beeped while on a bike. "I was just letting you know I was there" my arse!

Aye, what is the point appart from letting you know that they don't like the fact that you are there. Fair enough, but you've just made me slow down so I could look around and find out what the problem was....oh wait, I'm now holding you up more.....hmmm, beeping helped, didn't it!

Last year I had a row with a Boxter driver who'd beeped me on a single track road and then driven though a bush to get past me. He initiated the row further down the road by pulling up and waiting for me. It wasn't the most mature exchange - I think I burned my boats when I called his Porsche 'cheap' (it is mid-Hants dahling).

truly cutting, I haven't yet had the pleasure of someone pulling over for a 'chat'...I'm kind of hoping it never happens, I can't see that it would end well

It usually doesn't. The only reason I carry gels on rides is that the sugar-rush helps me swear better. Think Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet.

Some sort of moton thing...im a superior bully in a tin box so get out of my way.

Plus it's amazing how impatient people are...I expect it in London but I thought Scotland was better.

It's great that innit? They're in such a rush that they can't wait to pass you safely and yet conversely, they have time to stop for ages to give you grief.

'Tis I am afraid, the most likely answer.

I would hate to ride that road. I would be constantly aware that i am holding up traffic and that would make me feel like I was somehow in the wrong or had no right to be there.

Avoid at all costs

Aye, that's how I feel on the road, which is wrong.

Some on youtube have suggested a cycle lane, but that wouldn't help, there just isn't the space and they can often make things worse.

I might get on to the local council to improve the alternative hiller but quieter route (potholes everywhere) which could actually be advertised as a cycle route if it was in good enough condition.

I tend to agree unfortunately. I was cycling down to Brighton with mates once on this sort of road. My mate kept going to far left to pacify the cars but because of the camber, he fell off into the road once. Fortunately the driver behind was alert and didn't run him over but I'm never going to cycle that road again - it was horrible.
