Never gone for woodland type fungi...but we used to pick field mushrooms as kids on the airfield where we lived...they were huge, honestly, you filled a frying pan with a single mushroom. Lovely black juice used to ooze from the spore side as you fried them. Button mushrooms dont even register on the taste scale compared with them.
Puffballs, tried them....meh, a woody taste, didn't do it for me.
Dad always told me...dont pick mushrooms from near trees. I never did until a few years ago, I came across maybe 10 in grass near some trees and hedges. Remembered what dad said.., but they peeled like mushrooms, the underside was a similar colour...they look ok. Fried them then looked at the underside.....nooooo thankyou, they went a pinky red colour. In the bin. Shoulda listened to dad.
Dad also told us, when you pick wild mushrooms, tap the top of each one before you pick or cut it, then you spread some spores thus increasing the chance of other mushrooms in the future. Might be bull, but it makes sense if you think about it.

I think the thought was..mushrooms are easily Identifiable. Woodland fungi need some extra care and experience. If you're only interested in picking mushrooms, no need to complicate things byicking them near woodlam
nd where there are many more unknown species than in open grassland.
I assume its a simple rule of thumb as you say...but one simply to keep things...simple.

Came across this beauty this morning. It smelt pleasantly mushroomy but my big mushroom book suggests it's probably not edible. Don't worry, I didn't try it.

Is that a young Grifola frondosa? AKA Hen of the Woods? If so it's arguably edible. Although I must add that I've never eaten one, and that I wouldn't eat anything on the basis of some numpty on the interweb suggesting that something is arguably edible.
