can u back that up with any facts?

heres my facts,10 years 40mile round trip year round, music everyday,no accidents

Depends on the route really. I wouldn't dare have ear phones in for any of the 'commutes' I do, and I wouldn't really like earphones in anyway, however, for a lot of rides they are probably no worst that a car driver listening to music as most cars stop a lot of outside noise.

Sorry Thomas, but anyone able to find a pic of bicycle with a massive great ghetto blaster on the bars ;):biggrin:?

Here's a pic of the radio that often lives on my handlebars- especially when the cricket's on! It gets Radio Norfolk just lovely as well for the football and used to pick up Arrow Classic Rock until it got closed down by the nasty Dutch authorities, but that's something for me to bore you all with on another day.

i can listen to music and still hear the traffic, your eyes are far more important than your ears.If somethings gonna hit you from the rear it will happen music or not.
Besides i would rather listen to a tune of my choice rather than a spotty 17 yo tw*t in a citroen saxo
With respect, that's bovine scatology.

Have to say I agreed with a lot of this:

Cycle training UK would tend to agree with simongrant. Use your eyes, not your ears to negotiate traffic.

Far too many cyclists rely on their ears, and haven't got a 'kin clue about the traffic behind them, often simply signalling and moving without a look.

Is there really any need to be so patronising? Same goes for crankarm really.

Your skin, you do what you like with it. For me, I don't and 'am not tempted, to shove headphones in my ears and listen to music whilst cycling. I want use of all my senses whilst cycling. At least it gives me the best chance of survival out on the roads. That's just me.

The nearest I've come to an accident was avoided because the driver heard my shout: he was in the turn-left lane, I was in the go-straight lane. He started pulling into my lane, but when I shouted he stopped. If he'd had headphones on he probably wouldn't have heard me, and I might have had to do something more risky to avoid him. I want to be able to hear people shouting at me.

Excellent! I wasn't expecting anything like that to be recommended on here :-)

Hi skrx,i take it your in the US?,glad it worked out ok for you but the driver should have been looking out for you.Im sure the dailymail work wholeheartedly agree with me on this.
I can comfortably have a conversation with peds motorists and other cyclists with my headphones in and like i said previously 10 years 40mile RT 340ish days a year without incident.

USA? I had to reread what I wrote to check I didn't get left and right mixed up! (I sometimes do).

I'm in London, the close call was here (StreetView) (I was in the middle of the "A205" lane, the driver who didn't see me in the "Barnes" lane). Having read a bit more of CycleCraft last night, perhaps I stopped in the queue too close to the van in front of me, initially hiding me from view, with the car driver not looking a second time before changing lanes.

Whether to use headphones while cycling is a personal choice, as the risk is mostly to yourself, but personally I think I'd be distracted by the music -- I have trouble having a conversation with someone at my desk if I have my music on!

It's a personal choice as far as I'm concerned, and to be lectured in those links above by motorcyclists ("deserve to die" wtf!) is a bit rich given NOBODY can hear anything when some of those over-revved sewing machines go past. And I find music helps me concentrate - a tip from an old teacher many, many years ago when revising for exams. It works for me. May not work for you. In which case don't do it.

Should go on Critical Mass - Usually a few impressive sound systems to be heard.

So reminds me of when I did the WNBR in both London and Brighton, there was some really impressive sound systems on that ride, really added to the carnival atmosphere.
