I saw The Clash there three times, The Jam twice, AC/DC supported by The Ramones, Ian Gillan and his band, Hawkwind, The Damned twice, The Buzzcocks either twice or three times (can't remember🤔) and some others which i'll post about later when i remember. I also passed up the chance to see Culture Club and The Osmonds.
King George's Hall attracted some big names in the 70's and 80's. David Bowie when in his Ziggy Stardust (his way best in my opinion) phase played there before my time, in 1973.

I love these old venues and their stories, their limited capacity always seemed to enhance the experience, make you "part of it". Even the names are more evocative than the arenas and the stadia aren't they, all the Hippodromes, the Picturedromes, the Corn Exchanges, the Civic Centres, the Queen Elizabeth Halls, the Academies, the Forums, the Theatres. All that history, all the shows and dances that went before, in decades gone by. Something like a plastic and concrete NPower Arena (or similar) can never compare.

I never made it up to Blackburn, but being a Manchester boy, my city also had a rash of those smaller venues that played host to some big acts. I saw Iron Maiden at the Apollo Theatre in Ardwick, and I saw Black Crowes and Big Country (twice) at the International and its only slightly bigger brother, the International 2, which used to be a Pataks factory. I also went to Band on the Wall occasionally.

Since, I've been to concerts in all sorts of places including big stadia but those smaller venues can really make your spine tingle. Two of my favourite concerts were the Finn Brothers at Portsmouth Guildhall, and Jools Holland at Southend Pier, you really felt part of it. I later saw Holland in the Royal Albert Hall and it was great, but not as involved. I'd love to go to some of these places... Barrowlands, Hammersmith Apollo, just legendary venues.

Agree totally cannucks. Tour schedules of yesteryear (we are that old) would look very odd indeed to young folk now. FFS Aylesbury in one year saw Bowie premiere two classic albums.
Even Ribchester got bands. Have a vague idea even the sex pistols rolled up there.
Many of those places now gone - Hammersmith Palais - saw the clash there, plus the cramps.
Edit, Hammersmith Apollo? The Odeon?
Saw Devo there supported by the members.

So we were very quite possibly at the same buzzcocks gig accy
I remember seeing them one Sunday night. It must've been sometime in 1978. The audience or crowd if you were into punk rock  started chucking beer mats at the stage. Someone must've nicked a whole box of them from out the bar as hundreds were launched at the band. Pete Shelley said in his slightly camp voice Quote... "If you lot don't stop chucking those f..k..g beer mats at us we're gonna f..k right off home"!

No more beer mats were launched at the stage after that.

On about northern musical venues, did any of you ever go to Wigan Casino? There was a coach every Friday night from Accrington then onto Blackburn to the venue. I never went as i considered Northern Soul 'too poncy' and in a way i still do. All those baggy pants, vests, wussy 70's bouffant hairstyles, Adidas holdalls with 'Northern Soul' sew on patches, Brut aftershave etc weren't for me.

Hammersmith Apollo? The Odeon?
Yes, sorry, I've only known it as the Apollo. I didn't know it was formerly called the Odeon, thanks Wikipedia!
I used to pass it a lot when I lived in West London but I've never seen a concert there for some reason. Shepherds Bush Empire once, but never Hammersmith. It always put me in mind of Bruce Dickinson shouting "Let me hear you scream, Hammersmith!"
I think it was that live album that puts it up there in my mind as one of those iconic "smaller" venues. I gather it was a popular venue for metal bands in the 80s.

I saw the Eurythmics there when it was still the Hammersmith Odeon in 1983.
