the mk3's are the most "grown up" version and cheaper to run than the mk2. Go for the 2 litre if you can, but the 1.8 is still lots of fun.

I know it's silly but the pop up headlights would put me off. It's just a feature for the sake of it and would irritate.me. That said, a friend (stricly, his Mrs) had one and liked it and I gather it was perfectly fine. Never driven one or even been in one.

I quite fancy one of those Nissan 350z. Again never had a go in one, but somehow appeals

only the mk1 had pop ups. They bought in regulations banning them soon after. I can see the appeal of the Z.

I can see the appeal of the mk1 far better investment than money in the bank

I bought MrsF a MK2 1.6 about 7 years ago, I chose the 1.6 because it has just the 5 gears and she never gets out of 3rd anyway.......we loved it, it was hers but I drove it just as much, there cannot be anyway you can have so much motoring fun for so little money. Tbh I often preferred it to my motorbike.

Mk1's are going up in value, rapidly for standard unmolested ones, the MK2 's will follow.........I crashed it so intended to get a MK3 but they are too lardy for us, bigger, comfier, far better interior but the charm is just not there. We are now looking for another, age doesn't really matter, rust does, also the roof, budget £500 for new one if it is splitting along the seams. Lowish miles, 1-3 owners FSH and you can't go wrong IMO.

Most of the mk2's were 5 speed. I think it was just the "Sport" models that had a 6 speed.
