I've just purchased a laptop with Windows 8 and it is superannoying! Is there any way I can get rid of all those silly squarey things permanently and get myself a proper desktop?

Upgrade to 8.1 for a start. Then you can tell it to boot to the old "Desktop". 8.1 is easier to negotiate, and your laptop will most likely be telling you there is an upgrade available.

Got used to it now, had our HP Envy laptop a month and it boots in 12 seconds - super speedy. With 8.1 you get the start button thing, but you have to 'right mouse' click it to get the list.

I have the same problem and I use a mouse. My main bugbear is that when I am typing, if so much as a hair touches that bloomin' pad, the cursor goes off somewhere else on the page, or it highlights then deletes the lot. A right faff. I have an ASUS something or other. I have felt like throwing it at the wall before now.

+1 for the wireless mouse just get one where the USB dongle fits into the bottom of the mouse when removed from the laptop thereby switching off the mouse and saving the battery, the others just eat them even though they are supposed to "sleep".

Our HP mouse seems OK and hasn't 'gobbled batteries' - we leave the dongle plugged in.

Mrs 3BM's got a Sony laptop with windows 8 and you can press a 'windows' button and get a regular ye olde fashioned desktop on screen.

Use a wireless mouse and disable the pad - job done.

No it's fine. Avoided it till now, but TBH it's OK once you get used to it. Our laptop isn't touch screen but the touch pad works fine.

Have it with a touch screen and it's works well. Something's take sone getting used it especially if you're a bit geeky like me but I like it.
