joebe, even out of warranty you have the right to goods that are fit for purpose. I don't know what the legislation is and hopefully someone will come along in a minute with it, but I believe that if you would normally expect a bike to last for more than 2.5 years and you then can claim that is was not fit for purpose, that they have to replace it. In my experiences bike frames normally last more than 2.5 years!!

Obviously try the softly softly approach first. If that doesn't work....

Sale of Goods Act 1975

Are they all aluminium bikes that have failed? I'm starting to see a theme. My mate Tim's alu bike failed in roughly the same place as hackbike 6

HACKBIKE 666 where is you commute ? Baghdad ! what the hell are you doing to these poor bikes ! I've got a mind to report you to the RSPCB (Similar to the RSPCA but they deal with bicycle cruelty). Think you should post all your pics up on the photos section.:biggrin:

It was a sad time to lose 3 bikes in less than two years...the caad 3 aluminum bike being written off after a collision with three teenage peds in Feb 2006.

I became very disillusioned but after hackbike 6 left me I was walking past Evans Waterloo and saw a bike hanging up by one of it's wheels on a hook.Cruelty I say and I fell in love straight away.It was a Dawes Audax 2006 and it looked perfect for my commute so I kept it as a spare while hackbike 8 was used for commuting duties, then disaster struck and in September 2007 the Audax 2006 took over duties. That Christmas I ordered a Dawes Audax 2007 from an internet firm in Wigan I think and it arrived in January 2008 and has done less than 20 miles..Was used for a commute last year when the chain broke on the 2006 less than a mile up the road on my commute in..

Ooh, I remember your posts about your broken bike Hackers, I was gutted for you at the time. Nice to have an excuse to get a new one though!

Thankyou BM.

Are you sure it's not fixable?

Oh dear. Looks bad.
If the worst comes to the worst, at least you'll be able to transfer your bits over to a new frame.
Lugged steel is the future, you could just replace the tube if it was.
But everything's crossed for the importer coming good.
And it would horrify lots of people and look hideous, but you could put a fibreglass "bandage" round it and get a couple more years from it.

hackbike 6 is no more.

I remember when I was with the Crest Cycling Club in the lateish 70's there was a bloke with a bike with a crack through the top-tube.

he fixed it with jubilee clips and a few spoons.
