My bike in mercy dash

Son no.2 is off for half term, so we went out this afternoon on the Wirral Way with bikes and dog.

We're pootling along, stopping often, when on one stop I see a woman running along from behind. As she catches us up I recognise her as one of the morning dog walking crowd and as she goes past she shouts that her friend the dog walker, whom I also know, has been bitten by the dog she's walking and is up ahead waiting for an ambulance and has rang her for help. So we go after her and catch her up and I give her my bike and send son no.2 with her to mind the bike while I catch up.

When I get there, everything is in order, the other woman in the ambulance, bitten thumb and the dog now with the woman who borrowed my bike.

I don't know the story yet, find out next time I see them but this came hot on the heels of yesterdays rescue of a lost Cocker Spaniel.

Phew, have to get one of those blue lights soon

Well I don't know yet. It did strike me as odd, an ambulance for a bitten thumb but I have to say, she looked as white as a sheet so was obviously in shock.

I don't know the circumstances but the dog is quite placid, I see it often. It could be she got between two of them having a go at each other, don't know yet.

Update on this.

The women concerned is still in hospital after surgery on her thumb. It seems what happened was she went to pick up a ball at the same time as the dog pounced on it. It must have bit down hard and caused a fair bit of damage to the tendon or something.

Must admit I've done the same with my dog but he does seem to recognise when he's got me as opposed to the ball but then again Lab's have 'soft' mouths anyway.

My sister's dog (the only one I'm really acquainted with, I don't 'do' dog) - Welsh/border collie cross I think - is like that. You throw a stick, she doesn't go for it, you go to pick up the stick, just as you're bending down she makes a dash for it. Got to whip your hand out of the way sharpish, or it's stick'n'finger sandwich for the dog. I've got wise to her ways now!

Bitten thumbs can be nasty - people don't know how important their thumb is until they lose the use of it! So I think the woman did the right thing. Can't say I envy dog-walkers myself, must be a job full of 'interesting' moments!
