, the ice is the main factor
I don't blame you, there! If it had been icy AND that cold, I'd probably have driven a car, as I don't have studded tyres for the recumbent. I have them for my upright bike, which is my usual commuter. They work GREAT! You can stop, steer, climb a steep hill with confidence. Just don't get OVERconfident! You have to remember that you're still on ice, and can't take turns at high speed. Also, remember that when you stop and put a foot down, that you don't have studs on your shoes, and can end up doing a nasty split! [/quote]

, I suppose that the -18 is a dry cold and you perhaps dont get wet roads freezing and heavy frosts which put me off, its due to our moist climate !
You're probably right. Here, it gets icy if we have an ice storm, or snow. It doesn't get icy just because it's cold.

, One thing I wonder about is extreme colds effect on your lungs and any exposed skin ?
That day, I didn't have much exposed skin. I wore a paper respirator (dust mask), which kept my face plenty warm. I don't wear goggles, but I do wear glasses, which tended to fog up when stopped at intersections, but cleared quickly, when I got moving. I wasn't crazy about riding with my glasses fogged up for the first hundred yards or so, though! lol
