Dogs off lead and chavs with staffies/ pit bull lookalikes is something that seems to crop up now and again. I wonder if it will do anything to confirm/dispel prejudices?

At the last place I worked there was a "chav made good" who inherited some money and bought the old farmhouse. He had a bull terrier that he was trying to make vicious, my boss, the lasses from the riding stables and me spent as much time as we could fussing over it and giving it titbits. Chavvy never could understand how it turned out as soft as a brush.

The bigger the dog, the smaller the penis.

Personally, I have a miniature Yorkshire Terrier.

I think this programme has been discussed on here before, when it was first aired.

Terrible life for the dogs and the owners are just, well, self-gratification artists really.

Their attitude really does miss the point of what's good about having a dog, doesn't it?

You are saying big dogs have small penis's ?

My daughters boyfriend has a staffie. I took it for a walk and I was surprised how differently people respond to it/you. Nice enough dog to handle, but I'd never trust it 100% TBH.

We have a minature yorkie as well. She thinks she is about 3 times the size, but a very good guard (loud) and very fit for her age hardly any teeth now though.

Staffies are lovely dogs - I can't resist stopping and giving them a fuss if I see them while walking my dog. They look a bit evil though, hence the unease you sometimes get from people, I think.

They're a bit prone to heart trouble too, as I recall.

Having looked at dog rescue centre sites ther seemed to be a disproportionate amount of staffies in them. Can't help but think its a 'fashion' dog, being bought by chavvy owners for the image then them finding out an animal actually requires your commitment in time and money to be looked after.
Treating animals as disposable goods. ;)!

I couldn't agree more.

I 'm left speechless by that dj's comment "having a dog like this is better than having a knife."

Yes I watched it, quite depressing, does make me think a dog license and compulsory training might be good but again we end up legislating for the minority and penalising the majority, whilst the people it's aimed at, ignore it.

I like staffies, used to take one for a walk when I was about 16. one night he got out of his house and came round to us at 3 in the morning, barking to wake us up and go for a walk. Powerful dogs, he used to tow me on my skateboard at high speed with no problems.

When I was 8 my grandad had a Labrador - used to tow me around at high speed with no problems.... and that was years before skateboards had been invented.
Damm but I wish my legs would go round that fast today!

Its true that certain breeds may be more dispositioned (is that a word?) towards agression, for example Breeds such as Chows and Akitas which were originally bred for fighting.
However a dog is a dog and its temperament is largely determined by how it is brought up. Collies do not have the stigma attatched to Alsatians yet they are both herding breeds.Small terrier breeds can be unpredictable or snappy but their size means they are not as feared as a Rottie.

If you want a dog, research the breed, learn about its NATURAL behaviour, include it in your everyday life and socialise it as much as you can so it is fazed by nothing, Earn its trust and respect, and know your dog. Know how it will react in any given situation (yes you can) and take time to put even just basic command training in place.Try to include natural behaviour play-Dalmatians>carriage dogs. Take it with you on the bike. Labs, Pointers>retrievers. Throw a ball into undergrowth. Use your imagination, make training fun, and enjoy your dog.

Owning any animal is a responsibility and those who approach it the right way will end up with a great dog and bloody good friend.

Lecture over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dog met an Akita the other day, magnificent dogs but boy did he go into highly submissive mode when it sniffed him. He nuzzled it, licked it and lowered himself down: Clever lad, knows his limitations.
