My first clipless commute

I found the road type completely useless for commuting, takes take too long to clip back in. Much preferred the mtb type of double sided pedals which you can just stamp on. Have also done over 100 miles on the same type of pedal, as long as your shoes are stiff enough you won't get any problems with "hot spot".

I've got look keo sprint road model in lovely red.

Was looking at the mtb version actually, see quite a few riders on them, might switch over anyway.

Had my first clipless moment, luckily in the work car park, was trying to ride out and get my pass out for the door at the same time. It wouldn't of hurt at all unless i then scrapped my leg on the chain.

Think i may go back to road clips for a bit anyway as my shoes are too tight. I'm presuming they don't really give as much as normal shoes.

Oh, you tart

Bad luck on the "moment". I tried road pedals but swapped back to dbl sided SPD for commute purposes. I'm sure it's just a matter of getting used to it though!

On a slight tangent, what does everyone do about pedal reflectors in the dark? According to some websites, these are a legal requirement and a clued up lawyer could use this against you if you get hit by a car.

I don't think there is a legal requirement to have pedal reflectors, but do think it's a legal requirement of manufacturers to put them on the bike.
Same as with a bell.

I wouldn't think it's a legal requirement. Have to check the highway code.

A clued up lawyer could use that but if the driver didn't see you because of a lack of pedal reflectors then that would be very unlikely to be brought as your contributory negligence without any other aspects of it.

At night your cycle MUST have white front and red rear lights lit. It MUST also be fitted with a red rear reflector (and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1/10/85). White front reflectors and spoke reflectors will also help you to be seen. Flashing lights are permitted but it is recommended that cyclists who are riding in areas without street lighting use a steady front lamp.

[Law RVLR regs 13, 18 & 24)]

I haven't got reflectors on pedals, red rear or white front relectors. Took off pedal reflectors but I do have reflective bits on clothing. My M520's don't have reflectors but shoes do. I'm breaking the law I suppose  .

My understanding was that although it was still law to have pedal reflectors, it has been dropped as a requirement as far as the police are concerned due to the rise in use of clipless pedals on the streets (a relatively new phenomenom, along with the rise in road bikes).

It's only a matter of time before an insurance company uses the lack of pedal reflectors as a reason for not paying out in a rear hit accident though. "Yes we know you had a megawatt red light on the back of his bike, but it was the lack of legally required pedal reflectors that caused my client to run you over"
