Dead Common those Triban things along with those Giant and 'Spesh' thingimybobbers. Scotts too (also to a certain extent makes like Ribble (or is it Riddley?), Carrera and I have noticed more Felts recently too).

Stand out from the crowd with something different, but... what?

On a serious note, don't buy a cheap road bike. You will hate it. If you can, try some and possibly look at bike to work schemes or even credit for one that suits you. Good bikes can be as expensive as small cars, but you will keep a good bike a lot longer than a car, as you develop a special relationship with your bike if you like riding it. A lot of us on here know people who've been riding the same bike for more than 10 years because its "just right". How many can say the same for cheap cars?

Look for a 2014 model (or 2013 if you can find one) that has been reduced to clear. I recently bought a Cinelli Experience from Spa Cycles of Harrogate for £690 and it's been so much fun that my Wiler Izoard has hardly been out of the garage since.

I know a lot more people whose expensive bikes last about a year before they flog them in order to get something even more expensive because Bob who they play golf with bought a titanium bike, or because their current carbon bike doesn't match the colour of their new Range Rover Evoque Sport.

Exactly this. If you're new to roady riding don't buy an expensive bike yet.
