On the subject of which, can you explain in easy to understand language, why you decided to have the flu jab. I have been offered it, but do not understand what is inferred by "side effects". I read the thread on the subject, but got very confused.

Yes, but is that all the side effects are supposed to be. I have the flu jab every year, because of asthma, and I know that I will feel fragile for two or three days afterwards.

I suppose I am thinking along the lines of the MMR jab and it's alledged connection with Autism etc. Or is that because the MMR is given when the brain is still developing.

Well, usually the flu jab causes me little problems. This one seems a bit more uncomfortable. They were different volumes of liquid injected, the piggy one was larger than the regular one, thus more muscle bruising.
Having said that I've been away travelling pretty much all week, been stressy, long hours, delayed flights etc, so probably at low ebb anyway.
Having CHD it seems sensible to do everything possible to avoid swine flu. I think the vaccine risk is very low.

The MMR/Autism thing was/is tosh as far as I'm concerned.

So the side effects are those that you feel soon after having the jab. Do you know if they followed similar testing for swine flu vaccine, as they did for the "annual/normal" flu?

I suppose I am hesitant because of very serious side effects I have had from painkillers I have been prescribed in the past.

I was extremely ill with flu about 15 years ago, by which I mean not leaving the bedroom for three weeks, and off work for six weeks. My lung function is not good at the moment, so perhaps I fall into the category of "people with underlying health problems".

It is - I seen the police helicopter last Sat. and not only did it have 1 cam. under the body it had 2 more on outriggers either side....

BTW - i'm correct on the flu thing too ! you watch...!

I can't be certain of everything. There are always conspiracy theorists and scare-mongerers sorrounding most issues too. Vaccines have generally had a good safety record AFAIK. People allergic to eggs for instance would have a bad reaction to many vaccines so would suffer bad side-effects. I guess I've summed-up that the risk from the vaccine is gonna be less than the risk from swine-flu and made my choice.

Why not talk with your doctor about your fears over the jab or the likely effects on your health if you contract Swine Flu? That the govt. is recommending it for kids under 5 would suggest that the flu is very serious and the vaccine considered more than safe enough. I might be wrong, but it's too late now.

The GP practice is doing a special clinic for the Swine Flu vaccine next Saturday, the 28th, so I have until then to decide. It is interesting to read your opinion, but as you suggest, I will talk to my GP who can offer further reassurance/advice.
