My mum's mudguards don't fit my road bike?

Yesterday I was just messing about and cleaning my bike and adjusting the gears. I attempted to attach the mudguards from my mothers very old hybrid to my race bike.
I encountered 2 problems, first they would not fit between the front and rear forks, and secondly the screws were the wrong size for the holes on my racer. As an extra, I lost a screw down the gutter so had to take it apart.
Because they wouldnt fit, I had to abort and reattatch them to my mums. I think I will just stick to no mudguards for now, or get some designed for my bike.

Cruds, or SKS Chromo's (even race blades). Standard Chromos should fit that frame as the clearances don't look bad.
