Though to be fair, the BM I'm driving at present is averaging 50 mpg.

(I do understand that MPG figures are a relatively small part of the 'cradle to grave' environmental cost of a car);)

tip from the bmw forums.... when it's icy or snowing. stick a couple of sand bags in the boot of the car. helps traction.
my 230bhp actually behaves itself when the sand is in the back.

Fitting winter tyres is more helpful to the handling apparently.

I'll never get to find out as I don't want to be mistaken for a pimp.

yes winter tyres do help.... but sand bags on icy days are cheaper.... i can use the money to tint my rear windows ;)
