I've been a proud owner of a Brompton for 20 years now - first a 3-gear model, then 6-gear, both M-type handlebar, both racing green. Recently I've purchased a Ti gravel bike, and the thought of a Ti Brompton started taking form in my mind. I've consulted my buddy Gemini, and here's what we came up with in terms of an overall vision:

Pasted image.png

Aside from the strange training wheels (?!) it's a pretty accurate depiction of what I had in mind:

- A Brompton-compatible all-titanium frame
- Color scheme: silver frame and rims, golden accents (including hinges, clamps and chain), brown sidewalls, saddle and grips
- External gears (1x7: 54T front, 11-32T back)
- Mudguards - yes, rack - no
- A front bag block and a vertical bag (some kind of nice looking rucksack for a laptop)
- Components: mostly H&H (shifter, brake levers, rear mech, chainring), calipers by Litepro I think, wheels by Litepro, tires - Continental Urban Contact, TPU tubes.

Looking at various sites, it quickly became apparent that Bona Bikes are my guys. I contacted them over WhatsApp, initially asking a price offer for the frame. Eventually I realized that it would be much easier if they put together and shipped the whole bike. We've agreed on a spec and a price, and about a week later I had the actual photos:

It's still in transit: from China it went east rather than west, and is now in Korea. Once it gets here, I plan to wax the chain, move the Ti front block from my old Brompton, install the lights, a triangle bag with a few essentials for on the road repairs, and that's it, my ultimate commuter is ready.

Actually, no, I forgot one thing. Naturally, it is going to arrive in all its Ti nakedness, stickerless. I decided that it won't do, and also that it will not be reasonable to put a Brompton sticker on it. So here's what will go on it.

Yes, that is correct. I'm going to call her Blington, unironically and unapologetically. And here's my question to y'all. My wife thinks this is bad taste. I think, well, otherwise. What do you think?

P.S. While the bike was being built, I asked Vanessa the Bona Bikes representative to send me some photos of the process. I got a video shot by their mechanic, in which he puts the drivetrain components on the floor in front of him, while saying something in Mandarin. I don't know the language, so I asked Gemini to translate. Here's what I got:

Video Summary

The video shows a person pointing at a collection of high-end, aftermarket bicycle components still in their plastic packaging on a tiled floor. The person counts the items one by one and then reveals the total price, expressing a mix of shock and self-deprecation at how much money they just spent on these small parts.

Looks very nice but I’d definitely give the sticker a miss.

A wee bit confused. Is this a Brompton or a Brompton lookalike?

There are quite a few lookalikes popping up with things that Brompton should have added years ago. Disc brakes, standard cassette and gears, space for bigger tyres.

It's a Brompton lookalike (hence the thread subject - Bromptnot ). I totally agree: Brompton are very conservative with their design. It has its benefits, but also drawbacks.

I will be following your report closely as you are the only person I know in europe who has one. I am looking forward to what you think. Can I ask what was the final cost including shipping?

I see Will had something to say about it.

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.

Bona Bikes? Really?

Please tell me that when you WhatsApped them you got the reply "Oooh hello! I'm Julian and this is my friend Sandy."

I couldn't help but read your post in Kenneth Horne's voice.

Well, not in Europe per se - unless you judge by participation in Eurovision. Sure, I'll be updating this thread. The total was $3700, and the customs will probably want a piece of action too.

In the same vein, there's a Chinese motorcycle manufacturer hoping to make in roads to the UK and Europe with custom styled bikes, hope they've researched their market... https://www.bendamoto.co.uk/

As a motorcyclist I wouldn't want to bend my bike, go a a benda or anything else

It took her a while. From Shanghai, she flew to Korea, then Dubai, then overshot all the way to Cologne, and finally took a flight to her home here in Israel. In my impatience, I triangulated the likely last hop flight, followed it on flightradar24.com, and when it flew above me, went outside to give her a welcome wave (and yes, I saw the plane in the sky).

The custom release was lightning quick, and they swallowed the low-ball valuation on the invoice hook line and sinker.

At around 9AM the UPS driver called, and here she was.

I'm not sure what the "no pressure" refers to: to handle with care, but not to fuss around too much - to handle with care, and especially not to apply any pressure - or to handle with care, oh and by the way, the tires are deflated.

I opened the box, and inside... there was another box.

Inside of which there was a veritable mummy of a package:

An absolutely unprecedented amount of packaging material was found inside, both in terms of quality, and variety. Mostly cling film, but also bubble wrap, styrofoam of various kinds, bubble wrap and quite a lot of cello tape, not to mention cardboard inserts protecting various protruding bits:

Never in my life have I seen a package so thoroughly packed - and that includes several pairs of bicycles.
Also included were two spare TPU tubes (bless them!) and the pedal box with various bits and bobs.

So here she is, in all her unfolded glory:

Here's the new and the old side by side:

As she is, the weight is 8.4kg. I have maybe a 200g to add to that, to bring her to full commuting trim (more photos will follow).

So far the impression is of impeccable craftmanship. There was a small bolt that fell out of the steerer tube once I unwrapped her - I wonder what this is about, doesn't look like anything I'd expect to find on a Brompton. Other than that - no wobble, no marks, the welds look good. The bike leans to the side once folded, and I had that issue with my old Brompton too. They suggested to solve this by providing a rack, but I objected to the idea of adding weight to my commute just so that she stands straight on the platform as we wait for a train.

Of course, the proofing is in the riding, and that will have to wait until I've waxed the chain.

I cant fathom who'd want to copy it at all? The fold's very pleasant and all that, but in most other regards the alternatives have long since surpassed them in every other way and usually for less lolly.
