My new smartphone......

....yep, got myself a smartphone yesterday in BKK, been putting it off for ages, but finally had to succumb. My basic old style phone was good for a couple of years, then some buttons stopped working. Next, given a hand-me-down cheapie with touchscreen that seemed to have a mind of its own as regards responding to any touch.

Fed up with all this, I'm now the 'proud' owner of a Samsung Galaxy J7. This seems like huge overkill for my meagre needs, but I'm planning to de-clutter my life a little with this new gadget. Hoping I can ditch my two old MP3 players and have all my music on the phone, and no need to carry a dedicated camera anymore, and I think the tablet will be gathering dust also as there's room to store video content on the 48GB of memory. I don't do Facebook - leave all that to Mrs Crank, but occasionally use Skype and Line.

We travelled to the commercial heart of BKK for our shopping trip, and used the Skytrain for part of the
journey. Amazing to watch throngs of commuters queueing for tickets and passing through turnstiles, glued to their phones the whole time, never seeming to divert their glance in any way. I've heard of many more contenders for the Darwin awards thanks to this phenomena, hard to fathom how smartphones can have such a grip on peoples lives...............scary stuff.....

Me neither. I'm always amazed by the people I see with cracked screens: what the hell do you do to your phones???

They put them in their back pocket and then sit down

Having spent the last 18 years contentedly using bog standard mobile phones I finally got my 1st Smartphone too; a cheap LG thingy.

I'm getting used to it now but it still feels a bit like voodoo magic.

Drop them from the bike onto the corner of something else

Get a good case and screen protector before it's too late. Maybe unless it's a ruggedized one with gorilla glass but I think they never sold well.

I've had a smartphone since the Treo and then the Sony Ericsson P900 all the way through to my current Note 3 via Hero, Motorola (they were fairly ruggedised though) and now I've got a Nokia for cycling with. It lives in the front pocket of my jacket or in a jersey pocket in one of those little neoprene CRC pouches that mags give out occasionally.

The rest of the time, my Note 3 goes in a pocket but as it's over £500 of phone, I tend to remember it's there before sitting on it.

In my sister's case when she visited me 2 days ago ... Taking the phone out of a pocket too quickly, losing grip of it, and dropping the phone onto a tiled kitchen floor!

(The screen cracked right across but currently still works. The phone signal was lost however. That turned out to be due to an unexpected duct tape problem - she has a micro SIM but no adapter to fit it in the full-size slot so she had wiggled the card about until the phone got a signal and then stuck the SIM in place! I suggested that using an adapter might be the more reliable option ...)
