since i was yay high... haha I am a newbie but yeah i'm looking for a bike to basically to get back in shape...i'd be riding on mostly flat road not so hilly but id like something that i could go over cracks and rough road if needed..would a hybrid fit those needs what about a cyclo cross?...i definitely like this one http://www.dalescycles.com/2011-specialized-tricross-p3104 .....but its pretty expensive...i know the higher quality the more money youll spend....any good or ok alternatives ,something I can lets say customize swap tires for better ones i guess you would say. and cheaper in price maybe drastically cheaper. A bike for the time being until i can ''Step up'' to the big leagues :bicycle:

You don't say where you are located.

A nice cheap and cheerful Ridgeback hybrid going cheap here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/266596923383582/ Would do you while you save your pennies for something more modern.

Hi rs91,
Personally I would say Cyclo-cross rrhather than Hybrid as the CX is almost a road bike with different brakes, bigger tyres and often a beefier fork.
It's easy to look at upgrading the tyres and I believe some CX frames have the mounting holes for road-type brakes.
Where the costs will really start is upgrading the power-train - chain-set, shifters etc.
The Specialized you are looking at is relatively well priced andf a decent spec so should do you well for some time.
Replacing the cassette for a 9-speed later for road use may be OK (depends on the shifter).
A couple of colleagues of mine have CX and just switch wheels and/or tyres for road use.
