To begin, my commute is 25 miles each way and I work 13 hour shifts, ...

I already have a Yamaha Fazer 600 ... and what it saves in petrol it uses in tyres (£120 for a rear tyre, and it lasts about 4000 miles).

At the end of the day, if commuting that distance is not profitable in the long term, you have to make plans to move home or job. A harsh reality. I spent 11 years of my life commuting that far and it is costly.


In the short term - I've got an FZ6 (effectively the same bike) and I just got 10000 miles out of both my tyres. Maybe you could save a bit by accelerating a bit smoother ? I have touring tyres not soft compound specials.

Put £35 of fuel in my car last night. Wept when the needle still only read half full. I know that wont get me too and from work all week.

How much is fuel in France these days? I remember it used to be way cheaper over there and filling up to the brim in Roscoff or St Malo before heading home.

I'm lucky I rarely need to drive these days and only fill up a couple of times a year, however it's been the rise in heating oil that has hit us really hard - up from an average of 43p per liter in November to 75ppl now.

My Honda 90 does about 100mph and costs about £6 for a full tank...and that lasts to the moon and back (well, about 100 miles ). Tax is a tenner, and insurance under £200 (because of being youthful and likely to destroy villages for my lack of experience).

Honda 125 would be better, a bit more power which on a longer commute like your, but I love my little C90.

So thats £6 for an hours riding, seems expensive to me.

That looks amazing. I saw a Triumph something or other a few weeks backs back with a very cool looking Union Jack fairing, looked brilliant. You'd never get me on one though.

Yup, it was about 1.12 for diesel last autumn. Once I am out there I don't do much mileage in the vehicle, tho.

..but as User482 says, one day people will look back and say we wasted the stuff.

Yes, scooters are the way to go. Mine does something like 3litres for every 100 km (think that works out around 95mpg). My wife and I share a Honda 300 scooter - great fun and so much more practical than a big box on wheels.

I try to aim for 30mpg, don't seem to get their tho.

You have clearly got the wrong wheels mate. Even my family saloon Avensis manages 45mpg.

This was my attempt at motorbiking.

Harley Davidson FXSTB Night Train, it was only good for about 40mpg at best with its 1450cc Vtwin. Added to the £2000 insurance it wasn't very economical to run.

My Vespa derived LML does 160 mpg, it's perfect for a 25 mile commute and on a rainy day you'll arrive a lot dryer than on a small cc bike. On an A road run you may get the claimed 170mpg!

Considering it's purchase cost, residuals, £15 road tax, £80 insurance and ludicrously cheap spares, I don't think there is a cheaper means of viable transport.

How is it Mark?

I was up for buying one last year but due to job changes we had to get another car instead.
I still want one, but simply cannot justify one at the moment on cost grounds.

Dreaming has to be enough for now.
