...needs a bike.
We can't afford much but I don't want to spend on a cheapie from Halfords.
I'd rather buy second hand and get something a little better.
It needs to be a hardtail mountain bike with disc brakes.
He is 13 and tall - not sure what size he'll need, I'll get his exact height later.

Andy ideas what I could get for £100 max?
Local pick up would be good so we can try him on it first so was thinking Gumtree. Any other suggestions?

If you have Gumtree in your area try that, I got my bike through an ad on there. Just take steps to ensure it's not a stolen bike.

Don't be too hard on Halfords, the Carrera brand are quite good. Many of the probs associated with their bikes are due to the poor assembly and buying used that wont apply. I had a Carrera vulcan and it was a good bike, not the best but OK and tough. Also a top range bike for £100 is likely to be in worse condition than a mid range bike for the same money - few people are willing to let a £1000 bike with any usefull bits go for a tenth of it's value however a £300 bike might just seem "disposable" at that price if they've just got bored with it.

Or decathlon. The rock riders are decent, can't see you getting anything rideable with disc brakes for a hundred quid

For 2nd hand outlets Recyke a bike has a shop in Falkirk(Bankside Industrial Estate) as well as Stirling. 'I am Bikes' has a shop in Cumbernauld Town Centre and workshop in Lenziemill Industrial estate. Both are on facebook/have websites.

Or what about a slightly more expensive bike that might last a bit longer but on a 0% finance deal. I know it's the other side of the country to you but sunset mtb in Cardiff are great, have a great range on finance and deliver.
