My stupid Windows Phone

I'd like one, a handset, that I can use outdoors, without modifcation, for extended periods in a wet winter.

My daughter was massively relieved to finally get rid of her Windows Nokia, partly because now she can get apps, but mostly because it was so horrendously flakey. I had to borrow it to make a call recently, and complained that I wasn't getting a dial tone. "You have to remove the battery and put it back in," she said. "It does that all the time."

They are not compulsory to install, you know.



We need a new word to describe these things; pocket computers, perhaps? Because that's what they are. Messaging and voice are just two apps. If that's really all you use, you'd be better off with Nokia Candy bar which was much better for voice and ok for text.

I've been using mobile phones since the mid-90's when they were far less common than they are now. I was lucky enough to have my first one supplied by the company I worked for - a whopping great Motorola (if I remember rightly) and at the same time they installed a carphone in the fuel guzzling beast they provided me with too. Huge box in the boot, one under the dash and a phone and cradle on the centre console!

Great tool but I really only do use speech and text but also prefer a touch screen.

I bought a new Nokia 18 months ago for £35 on offer from Vodaphone and have all the minutes and text I need for a princely £9 per month SIM only. Wonderful!

I'm also one of those people who (shock,horror!) turns their phone off when I'm at home - our kids don't understand this at all.

There was a hugely amusing advert on TV some while back that had the voiceover line of:

"it's the first thing you see when you wake up in the morning..." referring to the latest must have device. And I remember thinking "how ******* sad is that".

Me - I wake up and the first thing I see is Lovely Wife snoozing gently beside me. I know which I would rather wake up to!

I couldn't agree more. Went for a quick 8 mile ride earlier with this thread still on my mind, and a good third of the pedestrians I saw were walking along blindly staring down and the piece of plastic and glass in their hands. One woman was even crossing a busy road like that with a young child in tow, which made me cringe. Bunch of utter saddos with no self-control.
