We had a bit of a bash, we did not bother with special clothes (we both just bought suits that we could later use for work), her Mum made the cake, my Mum did the flowers, wedding car was a London taxi. We had 150 guests, champagne reception, buffet meal, disco etc etc.

Total bill was about £400.

The other £4,500 we never paid as the company that organised it laid of most of their workforce the following week, and to this day we think as a parting shot someone deleted the invoices, we tried to pay several times as there was no invoice, there was nothing to pay.

So after 18 months of having the money burning a hole we put it down as a deposit on a house.

My wedding is something I documented around here 15 months ago, so without talking about the actual cost, I can say that I wind up my nephew because I got married in a Fijian Rainforest and had a month long honeymoon in Australia for less than the cost of his reception. It was a nice reception though.

our wedding cost us relatively little (and in terms of weddings held in cheshire, it must rank among the best value) as mrs alecetc's dad paid for most of it. it was even cheaper after the venue failed to cash (or the bank failed to draw the funds on) the second cheque. her dad, being a retired banker, reckons it's a rare occasion where the bank can pay the cheque and fail to take the money from the account.

so our wedding cost less than it should, at the expense of the bank

I've just realised that today I'm wearing that shirt I got married in - 9 years ago.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
£1000 in 1993.

That bought a full nuptial mass with three priests [1], one baptist minister [2] and a nun, a professional choir [3] and organist backed up by a 40-strong amateur choir [4]. A buffet reception in an original mediaeval room with painted decoration[5] with twice as much wine [6] as was wanted, a three-tier professionally decorated cake [7], live musical entertainment [8] and general hilarity. Both wedding outfits [9], dozens of photographs [10], transport to the honeymoon [11] and a four-night luxury honeymoon [12].

Described by one relative as "the second-best wedding she'd ever been to".

[1] Friends
[2] Father of the groom
[3] Including both bride and groom
[4] About half the guests
[5] In the church
[6] Oddbins
[7] Baked by the mother of the bride
[8] The bride and groom again, and friends
[9] Charity shop and homemade
[10] Taken by friends
[11] The number 7 bus
[12] One night in a hotel followed by three days in a pub

... So downsized it dramatically and to be fair was probably the best thing to do.
+1 for small weddings. Ours only had 5 people there. 3 weeks between deciding and actually getting married - and we managed to have a fortnight's holiday in between!

No idea how much it cost - how can you put a price on love
