As far as the gearing on the TCR Advanced is concerned, I notice that it's a 53-39 and 11-25 setup. Currently, my Defy is now a 50-34 and 11-28. Am I going to really struggle with the difference, or is the bike being so much better going to help with some of the difference?

I only started cycling this year btw, but doing pretty well so far.
That's a bit like asking if you should get off and push the bike up a hill or keep at it .
I did think about changing the cassette on my TCR but there was just because of white down hill where I wanted an extra cog . I ended up just manning up .

and avoiding white down hill

On a serious note , the power transfer on the TCR Advanced is nuts and why I say the TCR is an insane bike to ride .

I know what you're saying and my feeling too. Just wondering if it's too early for a jump in gearing of this amount, or whether to go for it and then work hard getting to where I need to be.

How does the Spesh Venge compare I wonder?

Or swap your current compact chainset for the standard on the new bike, this should give similar gearing on both.

Not a bad idea, especially if I ended up with the TCR Advanced 2 with 195 like I have presently. Most likely to persevere for a whole before such changes mind you.

Probably compares well in the performance stakes but, £2000 for a 2013 Venge Comp with Shimano 105 (not even completely 105) & heavy, so so wheels.

For what its worth I bought my Defy 5 ( compact ) last summer and by Christmas I had a TCR Advanced 1 ( double ) The change of gearing isn't that noticeable and not even an issue on most hills . Its not even an issue on the killer hills but you notice it the first couple of times up them .
