I saw it decades ago .. it may be a 70s production. Key visual image is a cliched Russian rider with massive black beard, losing to plucky american underdog(s).
For years I thought it was "Breaking Away", but googling that, it sounds like the wrong film. Help!!!

Funnily enough, a cycling friend was going on about Waterworld the other day. I asked if he had ever watched American Flyers? He had never heard of it. I told him about the hilariously unlikely bearded Russian cyclist, and other highlights such as canine sprint training.

I quite fancy watching it again for the escapist fun of it. Nothing like real racing, of course!

I’ve not seen it but from what I’ve read it sounds like a poor rom com with cycling as a theme.
Doesn’t sound enticing so I’m not going to watch and will simply agree.

I just finished watching it again. I'd forgotten how old it is - mid-1980s. Cheese-tastic fun!

I started cycling again about 4 years after the film was made. The bike I bought then was similar to the ones that the movie peloton were riding - steel frame, down tube shifters, limited range of gears, exposed cables, and toeclips. Things have changed a lot in the 40-plus years since!
