I also liked this heather, would be nice if I could get some growing in the front garden.

Any idea what it is?

Calluna Vulgaris. Now that one will keep going for a long time. Lots of sub species/cultivars of C Vulgaris but I think you may have the nominate one there.

It'll be fine in alkaline soil, just not as happy in acid. It grows in gardens round here in alkaline clay quite happily. Great for bees. Add some soil to that compost and 'sprinkle' ash rather than add lots. Ash is overrated (recent reports say) and is best mixed in with your growing matter.

And NEVER, NEVER buy plants in twos. Always threes or fives. Now get back out there and buy another for your pot. Thank me for it next year.

I'd differ with the opinions that this is an Amaranthus. I think it's Celosia though not the standard type most people recognise. Did you buy it in B&Q by any chance? Just happens they regularly stock the plant I'm thinking of - for the life of me I can't recall the name.

There are though a lot of Amaranthus with purple foliage and erect flowers. I don't think it's either of the types mentioned earlier.

@PK99 yes clearly it isn't Celosia argentea (plumosa), the image you've posted, but I think it might be one of a number of Celosia. When I recall the name I'll check it.

What it is not is A. caudatus as suggested. I did agree it could be one of several purple foliaged Amaranthus.

Not something I bought, but something I spotted in a public garden that caught my eye

A. Cruentus or A. Paniculatus is pretty close to the mark. I'm strongly doubting your ID as Celosia. Sorry.

I'm thinking of extracting it/them and putting it a pot.
