Narcissism in work environment.

I'm having a hard time at work because one of my colleagues is a narcissist. Every phase in the workflow must be carried out his way and questioning his working habits will result in an instant standoff. Today I spoke with our manager about the situation and he promised to take some disciplinary actions. Of course as soon the narcissist shared his "point of view", the whole situation turned upside down. Suddenly it was our work community that oppressed and purposely tried to target him so it would lead to him leaving the workplace. These disciplinary actions mentioned before are now carried toward us.

Please share your similar experiences and possible solutions how you got these knots untied. This situation is having a negative influence on the environment of our workplace. *sigh*

I am afraid that all you can do is set him up to fail.

Do things his way, but document the whole thing so that it is clear that he is solely responsible, and then wait for it to fail. He will either leave or be fired.

Of course if it doesn't fail, then it will be proof that he was right all along and the rest of you are idiots.

I would feel bad calling him a self-centered c**t... Finland zero points.

Actually I was reading your post thinking of the word Nihilist, which really confused me when I was reading your OP. Now I've re-read it I'd say your second suggested label may be more fitting.

I've worked with similar people when freelancing, and I'd just say try and get things said in emails, create a paper trail and it will soon start to occur to those in charge what is going on. Most importantly don't do anything other than react in a cool and professional manner. The saving grace of stupidity is that it craves publicity, which is always its undoing. I used the word 'it' too many times then.

I'm not very willing to set one up, that would make me no better than he has been the whole time. I honestly were looking for a way to untie these knots and make him understand that there is no justification for his behaviour towards us.

You have a point there. Getting provoked would be a big mistake. What we should do is keep carrying on like nothing had ever happened and watch everything come apart under his control... for a complete rebuild of course.

You wouldn't actually have to "set him up". As Mr Culture has advised keep things documented and he will probably do the deed himself.

We have a saying in the UK. "Give them enough rope and they will hang themselves".
