Depends on the type and speed of the train and the condition of the track. If the rails have gaps then you can hear them ping when the train is miles away but it only gets to a noticeable volume when the train is less than about a mile I'd say.

However, fast trains on good, welded line would be on you before you knew it. From ahead of the train there really isn't much noise.

Saved by pure reflex, looks like.

I'd imagine a lot of the tracks would be humming/vibrating - how do you distinguish something trundling about miles away from something bearing down on you at 90?
