Narrower tyres without changing rims

Keen but clumsy

Well-Known Member
Hi all,

My wife has a ~15 year old Specialized Rockhopper. It is a basic model with no suspension and frame fixings for full mud guards and pannier racks. She has just started riding it again to get to and from work - all on roads. The bike currently has 26 - 1.95 tyres on it. I would like to put narrower ones on it but don't want to change the rims. How do I know what are the minimum width tyres the current rims can take?

Thanks,
James

I have a pair of 1.1" slicks that I stuck on my MTB before I got a road bike. Anything above 1" should be fine on most MTB rims (except DH rims - they're thicker and heavier - but why would anyone want to put skinnies on DH rims!)

Something like these perhaps?

I am running 1.5 on my hardtail but tempted to get a set of these if I cannot afford the road bike this year.
