In terms of initial outlay, somewhat more than an ordinary NAS. For the Drobo + NAS add-on, I paid £500 (dabs.com). However, when I need to add more capacity, I can just buy a new (cheap) drive and add it (or replace an existing drive) up to a total of 16Tb with no downtime. So in the long run, expansion is much more cost-effective and hassle-free compared to an ordinary RAID+NAS. (That is, until ZFS is widely adopted.

Also, it runs Linux. So if you can compile your code for ARM, you can run your apps off it too.
