Is it worth contacting your local council and seeing if they publish any cycling maps? My one has a series of maps for both the city and also the surrounding area, they are free, small, easily foldable or rip-up-able, and when it gets tatty I just get another one. They are also biased to cyclists so have cycle shops and routes marked on them and loose other extra information (though the extra information could be useful if you were lost to be able to see things like church towers etc).

Good point – there are such beasts for Greater Manchester free from:

I'm a long way from tackling the terrain of Norway, but I am certainly excited about exploring more. Once I know I can handle "proper" distances and real hills (instead of the pretend ones here in South Manchester) I'm sure I'll be going further and further afield. I'm already contemplating a JOGLE (in two parts) next year or the year after. I've also already eyed up future bikes... oops...

oops indeed ... watch out, this cycling lark may become addictive. You have been warned

Hope you are enjoying your 9-miler!
We are just letting the late breakfast settle and are getting ready to go out for a ride, too :bicycle:

Another idea - once you are used to doing a few miles and are happy to explore new places further afield... local trains can be great for that, most (at least where I am based) let you take on bikes any time for free. You could hop off at the other end and cycle home, or part-way home, or do a nice ride and then catch the train back. We do this a lot.

I'm a bit gutted actually. I took a wrong turn (damn lack of map on ride) and only did 7.6 miles. It was great still, and I did enjoy it, but I'm disappointed I didn't do as I'd planned. It's still the furthest I've ever ridden though, so an achievement nonetheless.

Great tip about trains, thanks.

I hope the maps arrive quickly

Still, 7.6 miles is 7.6 miles! Further than the last ride, AND you enjoyed yourself.
So congratulations are in order :bravo:

There is always next time to go for the 9-mile route.
