worst for me is early afternoon when going to work on late shift , OAP i find are the worst as some shouldn’t be on the road given their lack of attention and driving ability.
Probably not, but most of this country has no great alternatives to driving (even some healthcare sites are difficult to reach without a car) and no effective ways to retest driver competence before they make damaging mistakes. It's a cruel way to run a country.

indeed , as you say a lot of people including my mum continue to drive way past the point where they are safe on the road and im not just talking about speed but the awareness of the surroundings for whatever reason be it cognitive or sight related .
it took a stroke and the dvla telling her she couldn’t drive before she gave up , before then she was having lots of little "accidents " but was unwilling to stop.

My Grandad liked to go for drives out into North Wales

He was saying one day that he had been going through one of the tunnels on the North Wales coast road and was not sure whether his headlights were working or not

he got out but had to go right up to the lights and actually put his eye against the lens to see if it was working or not
IT WAS!!

My Dad was rather alarmed and persuaded him to stop driving soon after

Only the Gods know how long he had been driving basically unable to see much at all

he was a wonderful driver, careful, calm and experienced - but not being able to see would certainly override all that!!!

These people are out there!!

I had an AM near miss on Friday SMIDSY decided to pull out of his parking court without looking, probably expecting no one at that time in the morning (circa 7am). I was going through a new estate so even though he came at speed he wasn't able to do it in one manoeuvre at that speed there was tight enough geometry.

My other SMIDSY of late (Wednesday circa 7pm) where matey boy pulled out of a parallel parking bay outside a village shop without looking. Probably again expecting no traffic.

Christ, it'd be a blessed relief if I lost my licence for medical reasons.

Also note the weather. I suspect many cagers drive slower and safer on sunny days and some drive faster and take more risks on wet days ?

Lovely but arguably it could do with scaling by the number of people actually cycling at those times of day or in those weather conditions. There are certainly people who won't ride in high winds or snow.

I nearly mentioned that, but it seemed too much like a statement of the bleedin' obvious. It's no less useful than a thread full of anecdotes though.

Probably not, but most of this country has no great alternatives to driving...

I hear that a lot but having spent most money my life living in villages or even the arse end of nowhere ive never had difficulty getting on the bike etc 2am for a 12 or more ride home.

What the country really lacks is an alternative to bone idle laziness. There will always be the genuinely ill, the extreme elderly, or those that really do live deep in a mineshaft at the summit of Mount Excuse at the far tip of the Kintyre peninsula, but the only thing stopping 95% of the population ditching the car for 95% of their mileage is the simple will to do so.
