Summer is here and so are the loonies! Cycling home merrily last night and very rarely have any problems on Blackfriars bridge, even though it seems a lot of people do. I got over the bridge fine and about to turn right on a green light. I heard a siren and gauged it to be too far to be a problem, but was concentrating on that and was unaware of the idiot jumping a red light. Total w*nker. Of course I shouted and screamed at him in language to make a category A prisoner blush, and he has the audacity to stick his fingers up at ME! I nearly went back to "give him a piece of my mind". Bloody cyclists! No helmet, no lights, nothing, going through a red light and nearly taking me out. If he had not stopped himself from cycling into me, then he would have been taken out by the ambulance coming up the road anyway. So it seems, that now the sun is out, silly season has arrived. Be careful!

So what has 'no helmet' got to do with the story? Do only people without helmets jump red lights then?

It's definitely not only, but from what I've observed, people without helmets, lights or hi-viz cycle with less care than those with...

I ride without all 3 of those at the moment.
Thank you for pointing out that I ride with less care then others.
I will try and change my naughty ways

Sorry Ian, I meant to say 'more likely', I had an especially bad commute in this morning so I'm in a grump.

Apologies.
From what I’ve observed, it’s mostly not. And I don’t have a helmet, hi viz and, this morning and last night, no lights. Saw quite a few rlj-ers today, mainly young blokes in their 20s in lycra and helmets.

How long you been cycling in London? I’ve had a quick look at your posts and this morning you were angered by a motorbike, with whom you had words, a rlj-er with whom you had words, a bus, with whom you didn’t have words, and have posted about being annoyed by random pedestrians crossing the road erratically.
Over a year now, commuting 5 days a week there n back and yep, I get annoyed at bad behaviour...

I did quantify my opinion by saying 'more likely', i.e. not 100%, not all, not everyone etc...

I'm gonna make another sweeping statement and say that cycle couriers and casual cyclists (incl. Boris Bikers) are the biggest culprits for RLJ'ing - note that none of these groups typically wear helmets etc.

Now you’re stereotyping cyclist who don’t dress like a fluorescent dragonfly on its way to a camp disco whilst wearing polystyrene on its head as bicycle shaped objectors.

It's the same with cars, those who drive cars with an obvious defect are more likely to have no insurance, MOT etc ask any copper.
Not saying that people should wear a helmet or even HiVis' I only wear a helmet on long rides and I wear my work clothes which are dark on my commute.
And not saying that every one who doesn't wear these item RLJ's, I don't, well apart from in the night when it is safe to do so.

This predilection for helmets and hiviz is rather silly when you look at a proper cycling country:

Neither have any significant effect on safety, and IME it's usually helmet wearers that jump the lights. They are the ones that are risk compensating.

Because I have a different view than you? Hmmm....

My observations over the 20 odd years of cycle commuting is that that lack of lights (during the day), high viz or helmet use makes no difference to the way someone may, or may not ride the bike. Poor cycling is caused by poor cyclists.

Maybe your helmet is slipping too far forward and is obscuring your vision and effecting your observational skills

Maybe different people observe different things, is that possible? ^_^

If I said EVERY cyclist that doesn't wear a helmet is an RLJ'er, you may have a point but I didn't, I just said 'more likely', there's a difference. Also, if I'd been cycle commuting for just a week, then again, you'd have a point, but I've been cycle commuting for over a year and 5 years prior to that walking the 4 miles each way.

Of course I've seen helmeted RLJ'ers but in my experience, more RLJ'ers don't wear helmets or have lights than do.

Just to be clear, I don't honestly care if someone chooses not to wear a helmet or have lights (tho the latter is illegal). I'm not sure if I've ever even said if I wear a helmet, I hope people aren't making assumptions

Apologies to Simon for derailing the thread by the way, I was just responding to Ian's wee point there with my own anecdotal view...
That's as made up as David's claim.

I think people need to appreciate the difference between a definitive claim of fact and a personal observed opinion...
