Hi guys

I am just starting to get into to cycling, I'm usually more of a runner but I have entered a duoathlon but all I have is a mountain bike, I have done the route a few times but I'm not going to be quick enough on my current bike, I'm looking for a a second hand road bike the only thing I really like is the gear changers on the brake levers, I'm in Kent and I'm 5' 11', I'm looking on eBay but I don't really know what is good and what isn't.

I have about £250 to spend.

I find it really frustrating as my main hobby is bass playing and I know exactly what I'm looking at but with this I haven't got a clue.

I would be looking for a Triban 3 or Giant Defy 5 on ebay for that cash.

Maybe an older Trek.

A quick breakdown on groupset hierarchy goes like this; from entry level to top of the tree

Shimano
  • 2300
  • Sora
  • Tiagra
  • 105
  • Ultegra
  • Dura Ace

Campagnolo
  • Veloce
  • Centaur
  • Athena
  • Chorus
  • Record
  • Super Record

SRAM
  • Apex
  • Rival
  • Force
  • Red
Shimano and Campagnolo also do electronic groupsets, but I've left them off as you wouldn't even get the rear mech for an electronic gruppo with your budget TBH.

Obviously components wear out, and are not always replaced like for like, sometime with better, sometimes not.

If you know what you're looking at then I'd always buy second hand with your budget as you'll always get much more bike for your money.

Take a bit of time to familiarise with the different components and then see what you can find. If you see something on eBay or similar post a link on here, people will always tell you what they think and give their opinions.

Hope that helps a bit

Search triban 3 on here and you will see its highly thought of. Also one of the cycle mags recently did a whole spread on this bike

Excellent, my main worry was buying something and then finding out it was cheap rubbish.
